Classification of Spanish Nouns


Classification for Existence

  • Concrete Nouns
    Is the noun that you can perceive by your senses as a book for example; these nouns are divided in two types.

    • Proper Nouns
      The proper noun appointing to people, animals or specific things. Is always spelled with a capital first letter. They may be names of people, rivers, countries, cities, animals, degrees, stores, etc.

      Examples in Spanish:
      • Names = Alfredo
      • Cities = Madrid
      • Countries = Mexico
      • Pet names = Lazy

    • Common Nouns
      The common noun appointing to people, animals, things or ideas in general and It is written in lowercase.

      Examples in Spanish:
      • women = mujer
      • writer = escritor
      • book = libro
      • dog = perro


  • Abstract Nouns
    Is the noun that you cannot perceive by your senses.

    Examples in Spanish:
    • Qualities
      • skinny = delgadez
      • fat = gordura
      • beauty = belleza
      • goodness = bondad

    • Feelings
      • love = amor
      • hate = odio
      • fear = miedo
      • sympathy = simpatía

    • Actions abstract
      • the study = el estudio
      • the work = el trabajo
      • the rest = el descanso

    • Concepts
      • liberty = la libertad
      • justice = la justicia
      • goodness = la bondad


The nouns in Spanish are same the nouns in Portuguese language because they two language are similar with some differences in the pronunciation and grammar.
